How does it benefit me?
In the Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 semesters, Ivy Tech will cover the cost of all required textbooks for students. No more expensive, out-of-pocket costs for books. Ivy+ is designed to save you time, money, and hassle. It is estimated students were paying an average of $56 per credit hour for textbooks alone. This is nearly $850 each semester for students taking 15 credit hours.
Also, with Ivy+ tuition, all full-time students are charged one full-time, flat tuition rate. Students are encouraged to take more credits, helping them graduate faster, improving their academic performance, and reducing the overall cost of their education.
What's included in Ivy+?
Ivy+ textbooks includes the costs of all required digital textbooks. If a required textbook is not offered in digital format, students will receive a physical textbook rental. Even with digital textbooks, students will still have access to low-cost print (or loose-leaf print) options as they do now and at no additional cost to them. Course materials that are recommended, but not required, program fees, course fees, and other consumable fees (e.g., exam fees, proctoring fees, nursing scrubs, welding rods) are not covered.
Ivy+ tuition transforms the tuition structure for student success by charging the same tuition rate for Ivy Tech students enrolled in 12 or more credits, or full-time band. - Your digital textbooks will be delivered automatically within IvyLearn. No shipping required!
- An email notification will be sent to your ivytech.edu email address when your order with physical materials is ready for pickup or when it ships.
Note: Students registering for courses within 30 days of the start of class will be able to confirm their textbooks approximately 24 hours after registering. This provides time for the bookstore to receive your class registration and prepare your course material list in the Ivy+ program. If you login to IvyLearn and do not see your textbooks, please try again within 24 hours of registering.
Will I still have a choice of materials?
Absolutely. Ivy+ textbooks is a digital-first model, but if you prefer physical textbooks or low-cost print options, you will still have access to them via textbook rental or optional purchase. Low-cost print (or loose-leaf print) options will be available to students at no additional cost. You have the flexibility to choose the format that's best for you.
How will I access my digital textbooks?
Digital textbooks will be accessible through your IvyLearn dashboard. You will also have access to quick guides, video tutorials, and other resources to provide helpful information and answer any questions you might have about using your digital textbooks in IvyLearn.
I've never used digital textbooks. How do they work?
Students will access all digital books through IvyLearn. Simply click on an eBook or select digital content in IvyLearn to access it. If an access code is required, a pop-up window will appear to prompt you to enter the code to access. Features, such as highlighting, read aloud, and note-taking, will vary based on the publisher and digital platform.
If I want to get print versions of textbooks, can I choose how to get them?
Yes, you will have the option to purchase and pick up any physical books at your local bookstore or have them shipped to you directly. Students will need to select their delivery preference in the Ivy+ BNC Student Experience Portal. Students may elect to have their print materials available for pick-up at the campus bookstore where the class is being taught or they may choose to have them shipped to their home address at no additional cost to the student.
If I receive physical textbooks, can I buy them at the end of the semester?
Yes. With Ivy+ textbooks, physical textbooks are available as rentals, but there is an option to purchase at the end of the term. You will receive an email from Barnes & Noble before the end of the semester with instructions on how to return physical materials or buy them at a discounted rate. Individual book prices will vary by publisher. Other materials, like notebooks and written lab manuals, will not need to be returned.
How do I return physical textbooks?
Students will return any required rentals to any of the Ivy Tech Barnes & Noble Bookstore locations.
Once there, signage will be displayed to guide students to the appropriate drop-off location and give clear directions on the process. If a campus does not have a bookstore, Barnes & Noble will designate a space with drop-off times and details. Students will also receive communication about this process before materials are due to be returned. Materials can also be shipped back to Barnes & Noble using a printing label that will be emailed directly to the student prior to the end of the term.
When are my textbook rentals due back to the bookstore?
The deadline to return all rental textbooks is the end of the 8-week term or 16-week semester based on the length of the course. Students will receive email reminders about the rental deadline to their Ivy Tech email address. Rental books may be returned to any of the Ivy Tech Bookstore locations. A UPS return label will also be available in the return reminder email.
What happens if I do not return the books by the due date?
If you do not return the rented textbooks to the Ivy Tech Barnes & Noble Bookstore, your student account will be charged the replacement cost. In addition, a hold may be placed on your account until you either return the materials or pay the charge. The hold can prevent registration and prevent the release of grades and official transcripts. Therefore, it is important that you return these materials in a timely manner.
If my class next semester is going to use the same book, do I still need to return it?
Digital textbooks are the recommended option for materials in a continuous class. If the material is not available in digital format, a print rental will be provided. You can use the same book for two consecutive 8-week classes falling within the same 16-week semester. Books are rented on an 8-week term or 16-week semester basis. If the course material is provided in digital format, there would be no interruption in access for the two consecutive terms. Materials, such as lab manuals and workbooks, that are considered single-use items and cannot be reused by students do not need to be returned.
What if I change my schedule/class?
Approximately 24 hours after making a schedule change, you will receive an email to your ivytech.edu email from the bookstore with an action to take. If you have withdrawn from a course and it has physical materials, you will be directed to return those materials to the bookstore in new condition, with packages being unopened. If adding a class, you will be directed to confirm your new materials for the course and select shipping or in-store pickup.
Can I use Financial Aid to pay for other materials I need from the bookstore?
Yes. If you have financial aid available, it can be used in the bookstore either in-store or on the Barnes & Noble website. If you receive financial aid (e.g., Pell grant, state financial aid, student loans, other grants, scholarships, etc.), those funds will be applied to your tuition and required fees first. Students can still use remaining financial aid for any other materials or supplies at the bookstore at Barnes & Noble pricing. Remember, Ivy+ textbooks will be covered by Ivy Tech in the 2021-22 academic year!
What if my professor uses Open Education Resources (OER) instead of a textbook? Will that affect my Ivy+ textbook fee?
No, the Ivy+ textbook fee will still be covered by Ivy Tech regardless of the course material type or delivery format. Ivy+ will save all Ivy Tech students money, regardless of which courses they take or textbooks are required.
How do I contact the bookstore about my Ivy+ textbook order?
